SILOAM SPRINGS — The Lady Goblin volleyball team had a tough trip to Siloam Springs on Thursday.
The team came back empty handed as Siloam Springs took them down in three sets, 25-17, 25-15, 25-16.
“The first night of the blended conference was a difficult one for us,” Harrison head coach April Mattix said. “I don’t think the girls were intimidated by the size of Siloam Springs’ athletes, but struggled with playing in that environment. A few of the girls mentioned they were distracted by the dual jumbo screens. I’m glad that we get to play in the blended conference for reasons like this one. My team needs to be able to adapt to difference environments and the skill level. The experience we are getting from the blended conference will prepare us for the next level.”
One of Harrison’s keys to the game was attempting to shut down one big hitter for Siloam Springs.
“We talked before the game about blocking their outside hitter, Shaylon Sharp,” Mattix said. “The girls had a few big blocks, but still have some work to do at the net. Our defense got a workout. Katelynn Grant led us in digs as they kept the ball away from our libero, Izzy Gibbany. Kara Dickey also helped out with a strong defense.”
Mattix noted that she has a young team who will gain a lot of experience and knowledge from nights like Thursday.
“We had several unforced errors which makes it too difficult to win by scoring for both teams,” the coach stated. “We are young with so much potential and this group will adjust and prepare for the next opportunity to grow.
“This group is very intelligent and grows quick in practice,” Mattix concluded. “We just need the experience of playing strong teams like we will face on Tuesday night. Up next we have Russellville at home. Last year, we split with them in their tournament. I look forward to seeing how we do with them again this year.”
